The AS-5004T is a four-bay network attached storage device which eschews the Intel Atom processor previously selected by ASUSTOR in this class in favour of a 2.41 GHz dual-core Intel Celeron J1800 (the same chip featured on the QNAP HS-251 and TS-451 we recently reviewed). It’s paired with 1 GB RAM from the factory, but you can opt to upgrade with up to 8 GB RAM supported should you feel the need post-purchase.
The AS-5004T takes advantage of the high-quality chassis employed across the ASUSTOR range, which immediately sets it apart from the harsh plastics of QNAP’s TS-451. The front of the NAS includes power and one-touch backup buttons, the latter surrounding a front-facing USB 3.0 port. Unlike higher spec models in the 5 Series range, there’s no LED display on the front of the AS-5004T, The four drive bays also lack locking disk trays – again, that’s a feature less relevant for many home users, but is worth noting for the security conscious.
