1. EPSON PERFECTION V800 (Best Professional Scanner)

Why we choose this Scanner

Epson V800 Photo Scanner is an upgraded version of the Epson perfection 600 models with more features and restoration services to give your photos a more professional feel.

Epson Perfection V800 Photo Scanner is a powerful flatbed scanner that can handle any task regarding photo scanning. It captures documents, photos in vivid colors but if you want to see what this scanner is capable of is when it’s scanning 35mm slides and film or glass negatives. It produces exceptional high-quality scans for both positive and negatives films of 35mm slides, 35mm strips of film, medium-format film up to 6 by 20 centimeters, 4-by-5-inch film and 8 by 10 inches films. At 6400dpi, V800 has one of the highest resolution scanners on the market. The Dual Lens System consists of two lenses and chooses accordingly based on what you are scanning. The high-resolution lens scans paper at 4800 dpi (optical) and the super-resolution lens scans photos at 6400dpi.

To speed up the overall scan process, you can conveniently scan negatives and films in bulk. The scanner comes with 4 height-adjustable holders which makes straightening and flattening your film easier while scanning. The film holders can accommodate up to twelve frames of 35mm mounted slides, three 35mm film strips holder holds (up to 18 frames), one medium-format strip (up to 6 x 20 cm) and one 4 inch x 5-inch frame.

With the LaserSoft Silverfast SE software, you can edit photos such as control shadow and highlights, brightening old photos, scaling, descreening and restore faded photos to their original colors. Others include Digital ICE, a hardware-based tool for digitally removing dust and scratches and backlight correction for bringing out details in both light and dark backgrounds in photos.

Epson V800 uses a high-speed USB 2.0 connection. It is compatible with both Windows and Mac operating systems. To get the very best of the scanner, you can get a Wet mount (optional accessory) to cut down on light that is refracted through the film strip, keep the film strip flat for optimum focus and fill in scratches on black-and-white film.

POINTS TO CONSIDER

If you are thinking of purchasing this scanner, here are some things to consider:

Although V800 can scan documents, there’s no feeder option for fast document scanning. If you plan to scan lots of documents with it, you might want to look for something else.

Secondly, V800 Photo scanner is quite pricy. Getting it for business use makes more sense and will justify the cost but if you an individual just looking to scan basic photos, then its lower version, V600 might be a good option.

Weighting 14.10pounds with dimension at 6 by 12.1 by 19.8 inches (HWD), it is bigger, heavier and will take more space in your office. The bulky sizes shouldn’t be a problem if you want your photos to have a professional feel.

Verdict: The Epson Perfection V800 Photo Scanner is a powerful scanner that scans documents, photos, negatives and films in vivid colors. Though expensive, it is worth the investment as it restores old negatives and will give your photos a professional touch.

2. Epson Fast Foto FF-680W (Best High Speed Scanner for Documents and Photos)

WHY WE CHOSE THIS MACHINE

Epson FF-680W is one of the fastest photo scanners to help you reduce those mountains of 50- 90s photos quickly. Epson ff-680 a 2nd generation model is an upgrade to the Epson FF-640 1st generation model. The differences being that the FF-680W model has a larger feeder of 36 photos scans at 100 pages of the document, wireless connectivity and has a new ScanSmart software for document scanning.

Measuring 6.9 by 11.7 by 6.7 inches (HWD) and weighing 8.2pounds, it looks like a small fax machine. Though it can scan documents, its real value is in photo scanning. The sheetfed scanner (most high-resolution photo scanners are flatbed) excels at scanning documents and can do multiple photos sizes at once.As many as 36 photos can be scanned at once ranging from 4" x 6", 5" x 7", 8" x 10" photo sizes and panoramic print. Just stack them up on the sheet feeder and it starts scanning. Then are three scanning resolutions to choose from – 300dpi, 600dpi, or 1200dpi interpolated from the 600dpi scan. It handles 36 pictures in 28 secs at 300dpi and 95secs to scan the same set of pictures at 600dpi. Though scanning at 300dpi is faster, the best mode to scan photos is with the 600dpi or 1200-dpi setting and for maximum archival value, save your photos in uncompressed tiff files than JPEGs.

It also scan both sides of the photo at the same time. If there’s any writing or notes on the back of the photo, it will detect it and scan the information present. To get the best when scanning, clean the glass sensor and rollers every 300 scans for dust or residue (especially glue from albums) and make sure your photos aren’t sticking together else they will misfeed or jam. To avoid jamming, photos should be loaded top-down in the feeder for proper orientation. With FF-680W you can rotate, crop, enhance, or restore images.

For document, FF-680W has a larger ADF (up to 100 pages) that can scan A4 width documents, US letter, extra-long pages, legal and photos of different sizes and panoramic prints. The button on the front panel gives you the option to slow down the scanning feed speed for thinner papers and delicate documents.

The FF-680W connects via USB 3.0 cable, Wi-Fi or Bluetooth to a   Windows 7, 8, 10 or Mac OS 10.11 - 10.13 including mobile devices. It can upload to cloud services like Dropbox or Google Docs. The scanner comes bundled with OCR software and allows you to save in searchable PDF format in BITMAP, PNG, Multi-TIFF, or PDF. Other features include a "Text Enhancement", for print aging, red-eye removal, color restoration and have the option to store both the uncorrected and corrected scans.

POINTS TO CONSIDER

Though ff-680 scans photo, it does not scan negative films either is it Twain compatible.

Another point to consider is once photos have been scanned in a particular order, it impossible to change it. This means they will be saved how they are scanned.

Finally. Linux is not a supported operating system for the FF-680W,

In addition, it has Epson's ReadyScan LED technology which enables no warm-required, faster scans and lower power consumption. With Epson's Easy Photo Fix software for restoration of faded color photos. It is compatible with Windows and Mac.

POINTS TO CONSIDERThe difference between the two is that V600 doesn’t have advanced features like duplex scanning, auto feeder and is not compatible with the wet mount plate. V600 is more for individual or home use, while the V800 is ideal for business or office use.

The software and drivers for V600 has not be updated to accomodate Windows 10. If you use Windows 10, this scanner may not be for you.

6. Epson Perfection V39 (Budget-friendly for photo scanners)

WHY WE CHOSE THIS MACHINE

Just in case you are looking for a quality scanner for photos but you would rather not break the bank, then you might want to check out Epson V39. The Epson V39 comes with all the basic features found in a flatbed scanner to give you clear and accurate color for photographs, artworks, sketchbooks, and documents.

Lightweight at 3.6 pounds with a dimension of 1.5 by 9.9 by 14.4 inches (HWD), the scanner is very slim in size and does not take much space. It can either be placed on a desk or on the built-in kickstand which allows you to place on a table vertically instead of flat. The portable size makes it possible to carry it on a backpack when traveling.

At a resolution of 4800dpi, you will get sharp image quality when scanning photographs, artworks, and documents. To scan a document of 8.5 x 11.7". (A4) at 300 dpi is 10 seconds. The optical character recognition (OCR) converts the file into an editable text. It even allows you to scan multiple photos at one time and the scanner will recognize and save each photo individually. The removable high-rise lid enables you to scan books and photo albums. Images look clear and accurate at a 24-bit color option.

Quiet and fast V39 makes every day scanning simple. Thanks to Epson's ReadyScan LED Technology, managing documents, organizing, editing photos and Convert scanned documents into editable text is a breeze. In addition, you can restore color to faded photos and archive photos and remove dust.

The operation of the device is easy. With four built-in buttons on the front panel, you can quickly activate the scanner with no wait time required. V39 is powered directly from a USB 2.0 port to a PC or any device supporting Windows 10. Images can be saved to.jpg, .bmp, .png, .tiff and multi-tiff formats and scanned directly to emails and PDFs. Likewise for locations like Facebook, Evernote, Google Drive

POINTS TO CONSIDER

Although V39 scans good quality pictures, it offers 24 instead of 48-bit color so the pictures are not excellent. This is to be expected as its price.

In terms of exterior, the scanner does not look sturdy. The removable high-rise lid looks fragile and should be handled with care.

Finally, if you wish to position this scanner any distance from your Computer, then you might want to get a longer USB cord.

Verdict: Epson V39 is easy to use the scanner for photos and for occasional scanning of the document. At 4,800dpi it delivers a good scan for photos, artwork, and documents.

7. Canon CanoScan LiDE 400 Slim Color Image Scanner

WHY WE CHOSE THIS MACHINE

Canon CanoScan LiDE 400 Slim will come through for you if you want to digitize old photos, artworks, sketch and documents but if your priority is to scan films or slides, I won’t advise you get this scanner. Canon CanoScan LiDE 400 Slim is an upgrade of Canon CanoScan LiDE 220.

Sleek in design, it is lightweight at 3.6 pounds and comes with a detachable stand if you don’t want it to take up desk space at home or in the office. With the stand, you can position the scanner to lean between a desk and the wall and just pull it out when you want to scan.

At 4800 dpi optical resolution and a max interpolated resolution of 19200 dpi, the scanner can capture whatever it's scanning accurately and fast too. At 300dpi is at 8 seconds and 600dpi, its 30seconds. The lid can be raised to accommodate thick books, artwork etc but you can choose not to close it while scanning. To get the best scans, it is advisable to put a small weight (like a heavy book) on top of your sketchbook, so the paper touches the glass while scanning. The flatbed CIS scanner takes a maximum area for 8.27" x 11.69" (A4 wide). If you need to scan larger sized documents (A4), you will have to fold the document, scan multiple times and do the stitching yourself.

The auto-stitching functionality in the driver and auto-correction will come in handy for this. Also, when you're scanning a document, you can keep adding pages to it and the software will save it as a multi-page pdf.

The LiDE 400 uses a USB Type C to Type-A cable. With the 5 inches USB 3.0, you don't need any separate power source as the cable connected to the computer does everything. It is compatible with both Windows and Mac. To get it to work with a Mac device can be done in two ways. Unlock the "travel lock" on the bottom of the scanner and the other way is to delete the Canon software and use the Apple scanning software called IMAGE CAPTURE. It is built right into your computer program already and can be found in your Launchpad programs under OTHER. This software will give the basic options similar to the Canon software.

POINTS TO CONSIDER

Lite 400 Slim does not have a document feeder or an attachment for scanning film negatives. This means it can’t scan both sides of the pages at once. At its price range, it is expected.

Another thing to consider is that the scan cannot take a Legal size paper up to 8.5" x 14". The maximum size it takes is 8.5" x 11.7" (so only up to letter and A4). If you want to do something large, you may need to scan it multiple times and then stitch it together to get the full document.

Finally, this scanner does not directly allow upload to a cloud service like Evernote, Google Drive, and other cloud services

Verdict: Lite 400 Slim is easy to use, quick, and affordable scanner for scanning documents and photographs at home and in the office.
